How the Stitch Count Estimate Works
The estimate comes from one relationship: design area times stitch density.
Estimated stitches = width × height × density factor
Density is where it stops being simple. It swings more than most people expect. A light design — mostly outline or running stitch, minimal fill — usually lands somewhere around 800 to 1,000 stitches per square inch. A typical logo with a mix of fill and satin lettering tends to run 1,200 to 1,800. Push into heavy fill or dense satin borders and it's common to see 2,000 to 3,000+ stitches per square inch, depending on fabric and fill style.
That's a genuinely wide range, and it's exactly why this is called an estimator and not a stitch counter. Real digitizing software counts every stitch actually placed in the file. What this tool gives you is a fast, good-enough number before you've opened that software — enough to tell a client "expect somewhere around this many stitches" on a first call.
How the Price Gets Calculated
Total cost = (stitches ÷ 1000 × rate per 1000) × quantity + garment cost + setup fee
Pricing per 1,000 stitches is the industry-standard approach, and there's a good reason it stuck: it tracks machine time and thread cost directly, unlike a flat per-piece fee that charges the same whether the design is a small chest logo or a full-back jacket fill.
Worth calling out: the currency rates in this tool are set independently for each currency, not converted automatically from a single base rate. A shop pricing in GBP or USD is usually serving a different market with different cost pressures than one pricing in PKR or INR — treating it as a straight currency conversion would get the pricing wrong in both directions. You set your own rate per currency, and the tool keeps them separate.
Thread Usage and Machine Time
Thread consumption scales with stitch count and average stitch length — more stitches or longer stitches means more thread per piece, which matters once you're buying cones for a production run instead of stitching one shirt. Machine time works off stitch count divided by machine speed (most commercial machines run somewhere around 600–750 stitches per minute), plus time added back for every color change, since the machine stops while the operator trims and re-threads. On a short run that's a rounding error. Across 500 pieces with multiple color changes, it adds real hours to the job — which is exactly what you're being paid to account for.

How many stitches are in an average embroidery design?
It depends heavily on size and fill, but a typical small-to-medium logo (roughly 3-4 inches) with a mix of fill and satin lettering usually falls somewhere between 5,000 and 15,000 stitches. Larger designs or heavy fill areas push well past that.
How do I price embroidery per 1,000 stitches?
Start from your actual costs (machine time, thread, labor, digitizing) and build your margin on top of that, rather than copying a number you saw online, since rates vary a lot by country and market.
How much thread does an embroidery design use?
Thread length scales roughly with stitch count multiplied by average stitch length, commonly around 2 to 4mm. A 10,000-stitch design at a 3mm average works out to about 30 meters of top thread, before accounting for bobbin thread.
How long does it take to embroider a logo?
